Why is Home Ventilation Important?

Airing The Home Out

In the past few years, we have been spending more and more time in our homes. This means the comfort and safety of our homes is more important than ever. And in order to do that, just like us, our homes need to breathe.

Without ventilation, the air in our homes would quickly become stale and stagnant, and could take a toll on our health. The team at Air Care & Canyon Lake Air Conditioning is here with a few reasons why good home ventilation is essential, what happens when you have poor indoor air quality, and the ways in which you can improve your comfort at home.

What is Ventilation?

Ventilation is the process of removing stale or dirty air from a home and bringing in clean, good air. There are several ways to add ventilation into your home including air conditioning, ceiling fans, windows, and exhaust fans.

Reduce Moisture

When humid air quickly becomes cooled, it turns into condensation on the nearest cold surface. We see this on cars, a glass of iced tea, and on our windows. However, these condensation droplets can also find themselves on walls, ceilings, and inside ductwork.

These water droplets then seep into those surfaces and encourage the growth of mold and mildew. This is not only harmful to the structural integrity of your home, but it can also cause health issues like:

  • Headaches
  • Respiratory issues
  • Eyes, nose, and throat irritation

When your home has proper ventilation, the continuous movement of air keeps everything moving and does not allow for condensation to form and take over the home.

Bonus Tip: When cooking and showering, be sure to turn on the exhaust fans in your kitchen and bathroom to help reduce moisture build-up.

Improve Air Quality

You have likely been somewhere where the air feels thick and heavy. Wherever it was likely had little to no ventilation and poor indoor air quality. Without a method in place to keep air cycling throughout the space, pollutants like dirt, bacteria, mold spores, pet dander, moisture, and unpleasant smells will linger.

Better air quality may significantly reduce symptoms of allergies and asthma, giving everyone the chance to breathe better in your home.

This is another reason why the exhaust fans in your kitchen and bathroom are essential. Additionally, the air filters within your HVAC unit have the ability to decrease and increase your air quality. These filters should be replaced every 3 months to ensure they are providing you with the cleanest air possible.

Increase Home Comfort

Even though we want to be warm and cozy during the winter months, that does not mean we want stuffy homes! Ventilation is a key part of keeping your home and family comfortable all year long.

Ceiling fans are a great way to improve your comfort, and not only in the summertime! Did you know that your ceiling fans’ settings can be reversed and used in the winter to move clean, warm air around a space?

Better Energy Usage

With clean air moving through each room in your home, your HVAC will be better able to maintain even temperatures across the board. This means less cold or hot spots! It also means better regulation for energy use and more consistent, and maybe even lower, energy bills.
